ADHD Prescription Medication List

Share for others

There are several prescription medications available to treat ADHD. All of them require a doctor’s prescription, of course. Most of these ADHD drugs are, unfortunately, considered Class II drugs which means that they get the same treatment as addictive drugs like pain killers. Basically, it just makes it a bigger pain for honest, medically diagnosed people with ADHD to get the prescription medication they really need while doing little to nothing to stop those who want to abuse ADD drugs.

As Class II meds, ADHD prescriptions are non-refillable. You have to take a new piece of prescription paper to to the pharmacy every single time you need to have your ADHD meds filled. A reasonable doctor will send you away from your visit (after you have completed your initial evaluation and dosage setting) with multiple prescriptions in hand. Typically, you will want to fill them once a month, or every 30 days in order to get full insurance coverage of ADHD medications.

Since you have Attention Deficit Disorder, chances are you will miss taking a dose of your Adderall, or whatever you take, every so often. This is good because it will allow you to build up a cushion of ADHD meds that you can use as a buffer if you are unable to get a refill on exactly the right date. (You can’t get them early because of the insurance company. If you have no insurance or your ADHD medications are not covered, then this doesn’t apply to you.) Mark your calendar and get a new prescription every 30 days regardless of how many pills are left in your little orange bottle. This way, when you are going out of town on vacation and won’t be around on the day you are allowed to get your refill, you won’t run out of meds or have to fight the insurance company to get your prescription filled early, or take a prescription with you to get filled in a some strange town.
